The age of 3 to 6 years is the foundational years of a child’s life. These years are also called Pre-school years. The development of cognitive skills at this age will set a new level of intelligence in the child. Now, what exactly are cognitive skills? Being flexible or being able to adapt and to make comparisons is of utmost importance in our day-to-day life. To adapt to one’s surroundings or environment is effortless than to familiarize with some other surrounding. The possibility of being flexible is more in people who live away from their home town. It hence becomes easy for them to compare, evaluate and analyse.

The curiosity to explore and understand the surroundings is prominent in toddlers. Toddlers develop higher-level thinking through their attention during their play. They also apply their logic and store it in their memory and emote them from time to time through their drawing or pretend play. Children also categorize things they see around them.

Learning languages other than the mother tongue can develop most of the factors of cognitive skills. One studies the language with utmost attention applies her/his logic to remember the vocabulary or grammar rules. They also tend to compare the newly learnt vocabulary with their mother tongue. Learning a language makes them flexible to adapt not only to their language but their culture and customs. Research shows that learning a second language boosts a child’s problem-solving, critical thinking, and listening skills, in addition to improving memory, concentration, and the ability to multitask. Children proficient in other languages also show signs of enhanced creativity and mental flexibility. Learning another language also develops empathy towards other people and also be tolerant. It is also shown in the research that multilingual children score more in academics.
